One thing that gets in the way of clear thinking on many issues is cynicism, or the belief that people are motivated purely by self-interest.
Don’t get me wrong, anyone who claims to be acting completely outside of their self interest is most likely lying. There are narcissists and psychopaths who truly do not care about anyone’s wellbeing but their own. However, most people are not so ruthlessly selfish.
On the societal level, it is important to remember that progress has been made. Why? Because understanding that we have made life better in the past shows us that we can continue to do so.
And such improvement requires us to search for optimal solutions to problems, to act on our desires for justice, and, above all, to think clearly about the tradeoffs that will inevitably arise.
