Distracted driving is any non-driving activity a person engages in while operating a motor vehicle. Such activities have the potential to distract the person from the primary task of driving and increase the risk of crashing.

Cell phone use is a major cause of distracted driving. And it is growing. Five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while texting. When traveling at 55 mph, that's enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded.

Headset cell phone use is not substantially safer than hand-held use. Fatal accidents result when the driver becomes more absorbed in the conversation and loses touch with the vehicle's movement.

The first step in avoiding distractions is understanding what they are, especially when you are operating a vehicle. Even a few seconds distraction can cause you to lose control of the situation. Stay alert and avoid distractions both inside and outside the vehicle.
