I like flies that are simple to tie, fill important niches, and solve problems. Every streamer box needs some good sculpin patterns. This fly is simple to tie, fills the niche of a small sculpin/minnow, and solves several problems encountered when fishing sculpin flies.
Problem 1. Sculpins dwell on the bottom. Sculpin flies take a beating when fished along the bottom. The best patterns ride hook upright, so the hook is less likely to get snagged or dulled from bottom contact as it scrapes along from time to time.
Problem 2. Trout, especially rainbows, tend to slash at sculpin. This can make them hard to hook on the initial grab. The upright jig style hook seems to hold a much higher percentage of quick slashy grabs then a traditional down angled hook. That means more fish to hand.
The Platform
I’m using a Genryuu 90 degree jig hook in size 4 and 6. I slide a 1/8” Tungsten bead on the hook or if I want to tie it balanced, onto a sequin pin. For the balanced version, leave about a 16th inch gap between the hook and bead.
