(14 Apr 2020) The U.S. government's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci is cautioning that more research needs to be done before effective novel coronavirus antibody tests can be used.
In an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, Fauci said the United States needed "to get a test that works and that's that's reproducible."
But he said there was more work to be done to determine the strength and length of protection when antibodies are found.
Fauci is concerned that people could potentially receive a "antibody passport" and incorrectly believe they are protected from the virus.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.
