When we are looking at new terrain it has to tick a lot of boxes.
First we are looking for high snowfall areas around Hokkaido. Generally the western side of Hokkaido gets more snowfall because most of the snow comes across from the Sea of Japan side.
Then we are looking at the mountains. How long of an approach is it into the mountains from the roadside? What sort of vertical do the runs have? Are the lee aspects accessible and how well spaced are the trees?
If it looks like the terrain can satisfy these requirements, then we will go into the area and research the possible circuits that we can do. With the smaller mountains in Hokkaido, you can access a number of different aspects, and even 360 degrees around the mountain.
Because of this flexibility, we are able to make a number of different circuits at one backcountry location and do a circuit that gives us the best snow on the day.
