Omega 3 products are effective treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. That’s why
Food and Drug Administration approved Omega 3, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in adults with elevated triglyceride levels.
The effectiveness of omega 3 is currently investigating on several diseases: including: Type 2 diabetes, Cancers, Alzheimer disease and dementia.
Depression, Menopausal night sweats, heart failure and several other conditions.
Humans are unable to synthesize the essential omega−3 fatty acids, they can only obtain it through diet. So we need these fatty acids that’s why it called essential and we should intake them from diet.
The three types of omega−3 fatty acids involved in human physiology: are α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA); and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
ALA can be found in plants include: walnuts, edible seeds, and flaxseeds. while DHA and EPA are found in fish and fish oils.
ALA is most important. Because, Human can synthesize EPA and DHA from ALA.
Although, this process may be impaired in aging.
In foods exposed to air, unsaturated fatty acids are vulnerable to oxidation and rancidity.
Omega 3 fatty acids may have several mechanism of action including:
Suppressing lipogenic gene expression; Lowers Triglycerides.
Inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity and resulted anti inflammatory action.
DHA is an essential component of the brain's phospholipid membranes. Subsequently it can protect brain from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and improve cognitive functions.
DHA, decrease mitochondrial oxygen consumption, without reducing power generation for the ventricles by altering the mitochondrial membrane phospholipid composition, protecting the heart from tiring. Whereas EPA inhibits the apoptotic activity stimulated by saturated fatty acid cardiac lipotoxicity, protecting the heart from injury. This action explains cardioprotective characteristics in heart failure in congestive heart failure patients.
Omega 3 fatty acids inhibit acetyl-Coenzyme a carboxylase. (decreasing fatty acid production). It may explain anticancer activity. For many cancers including breast cancer, lung cancer, Leukemia and gastric cancer.
The FDA-approved fatty acid prescriptions and they are generally safe with benign side effects.
And finally, we should mention that, even Omega 3 has many health benefit effects evidences still low quality and the benefit is not important. Further researches are needed to determine exact health effects and correlation between intake of omega 3 and reduced risk of morbidity and mortality.
