The best way to explore the Tanjung Puting National Park and journey deep into the forested surrounds is cruising along the river aboard a klotok houseboat. Named after the noise that the boat makes as it travels – ‘klok tok tok tok’ – these wooden river boats were traditionally used to transport goods and passengers up and down the river, but many have now been converted into houseboats for tourists.
Binoculars in one hand, camera in the other, you’ll cruise through the parks’ dense forest and mangrove swamps, spotting its indigenous inhabitants such as proboscis monkeys & macaques, crocodiles & hornbills and hopefully the famous orang-utan.
Slightly unique in style and size. Outdoor deck space doubles up as a dining area, relaxation space, sleeping area (if you fancy sleeping under the stars) and viewing platform from where you can sit and watch the scenery drift by. You’ll be well looked after by a klotok crew who, as well as navigating the river, will serve up traditional Indonesian meals in between wildlife spotting explorations into the jungle.
It's possible to arrange both private and shared klotok packages.
