Mopane worms, or caterpillars of the emperor moth, are a delicacy popular in Southern African countries such as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. These larvae live on mopane trees, whose leaves they consume. The harvesting season begins after the first rains when the moth eggs hatch. Local residents collect them by hand from trees and shrubs, then cut them open, remove the innards, and rinse them. There are several ways to prepare mopane worms. One of the most common methods is sun-drying, which makes them crunchy and allows for long-term storage. Frying in oil with added salt and spices is also popular, giving the worms a rich flavor and pleasant texture. Boiling in salted water or broth allows them to be used in soups and stews, where they absorb the flavors of other ingredients. Mopane worms can be eaten as a snack, a main dish with vegetables or maize porridge, or added to stews. They are an important source of protein and hold significant cultural and economic value for local communities.
