A young Pavarotti sings "Ingemisco" from Verdi's Requiem, from a concert given on Oct. 10, 1970 at the Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, in Rome. Claudio Abbado conducts the RAI Symphony of Rome and the RAI Chorus of Milan. He and Pavarotti have considerable difficulty staying together, but what a pleasure to hear the tenor's gorgeous *mezza-voce,* which would eventually degenerate into a whispery croon.
