ABOUT Pinyin: 拼音 (Pinyin) is a romanized method for sounding out Chinese characters, used by native speakers and foreign learners as well to learn Chinese. It consists of 21 initials (consonants), 6 vowels, and -r/-n/-ng as final consonants. All sounds are pronounced with one of 4 tones (plus a neutral tone): a flat tone (¯), a rising tone (´), a low dipping tone (ˇ), and a falling tone (`). Up to 400 total sounds are possible by combining the vowels and final consonants.
CONSONANT Names: Like English, the names of the consonants are generally pronounced with a vowel (J = "jay"/ F = "ef"). Here are all the consonants with their vowels: bo, po, mo, fo // de, te, ne, le // ge, ke, he // ji, qi, xi // zi, ci, si // zhi, chi, shi, ri
