Eleagnus x ebbingei is one of the easiest plants to grow in the UK and in temperate climates in general, resisting down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. It is very adaptable to a variety of soils as long as they are not waterlogged, and to a variety of light conditions from full sun to full shade. In addition, it has a beautiful foliage, dark green with scattered silver dots on the upper surface of the leaves, while leaf underneath shows a silvery-greysh colour, giving a shimmering appearance to the plant. Furthermore, it is resistant to most pests and can be grown without any problem near the sea and the ocean, because the gorgeous foliage is resistant to salt-laden winds, often common on the seaside, therefore can be used as a hedging plant in many sites. However what makes this hybrid plant special is the wonderful fragrance, sweet and very intense, coming from a profusion of small white flowers that cover the plant in autumn, making it one of the most fragrant and best scented plants to grow in your garden. In addition to the wonderful fragrance, the flowers are loved by pollinators, and you can see in the video several bees pollinating the flowers, very much appreciated because there are not many flowers that bloom in autumn and offer pollinators a good source of nectar. Eleagnus x ebbingei is definitely one of the best plants that I can recommend for fragrant gardens, because its intensely scented flowers bloom in autumn, a season when fragrant plants usually are not in flower. I am very lucky in having a huge hedge of this plant growing a few ,metres far my house in Kent, England, UK, filling the air with its sweet fragrance in October and November.
