Wimbledon The Championships 2021
Gentleman’s Singles | 1st Round
Featuring Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray
Last year during the COVID pandemic, Wimbledon was cancelled so we at Trevor Sports recreated the tournament virtually using AO Tennis 2, was a huge success for the channel and this year we are back recreating a 128 Gentleman’s single Championship. In todays show it is the highlights of the best of Round 1 as we go from 128 competitors to 64.
The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon or The Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts, since 2009 with a retractable roof over Centre Court, and since 2019 over No. 1 Court.
Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass, which is the traditional tennis playing surface.
The tournament traditionally took place over two weeks in late June and early July, starting on the last Monday in June and culminating with the Ladies' and Gentlemen's Singles Finals, scheduled for the Saturday and Sunday at the end of the second week. However, changes to the tennis calendar in 2015 have seen the event moved back by a week to begin in early July. Five major events are held each year, with additional junior and invitational competitions also taking place.
Wimbledon traditions include a strict all-white dress code for competitors and royal patronage. Strawberries and cream are traditionally consumed at the tournament.[9] In 2017, fans consumed 34,000 kg (33 imperial tons) of British strawberries and 10,000 litres (2,200 imperial gallons) of cream.
The tournament is also notable for the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts, with the exception of Rolex, which provides timekeeping technology during matches, and Robinsons barley water.
In 2009, Wimbledon's Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to lessen the loss of playing time due to rain. A roof was operational over No. 1 Court from 2019, when a number of other improvements were made, including adding cushioned seating, a table and 10 independently operable cameras, per court, to capture the games.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Championships were cancelled, the first cancellation of the tournament since World War II. It was however played on Trevor Sports with Rafael Nadal winning in straights sets vs Roger Federer in the Final.
This video is a tribute to BBC Grandstand that ran from 1958 to 2007, and I am recreating the look a feel of an early 90’s Live Grandstand broadcast. My plan is to bring back the early 1990’s style of TV broadcasting and attach it to modern PC Games. I’ve always liked the way BBC Sport was able to present sport in this era, however, I also loved the commentary and presenters that gave us the words to some truly brilliant sporting action. The Likes of John Motson, Tony Gubba, Murray Walker, Bill McLaren, Gerald Sinstadt, Peter Alliss, Richie Benaud and my personal favourite Barry Davies. I also liked the presenters and pundits, Des Lynam is a legend in my generation for being the host of Grandstand and Match of the Day, Steve Rider and David Coleman who presented just about everything, but was the voice of athletics in the 1990's.
