The Raised on Radio Tour was a concert tour by the American Rock Band Journey. The tour was the last with lead singer Steve Perry. Following Journey's two most successful albums,Escape and Frontiers, lead singer Steve Perry began to take more control over the band's direction. Ross Valory and Steve Smith were fired from the band, against the wishes of manager Herbie Herbert. The two were replaced by various studio musicians for the recording of Raised on Radio, including Randy Jackson (bass guitar) and Larrie Londin (drums). Smith did record three tracks with Journey on the album, and he and Valory still received revenues from the record and subsequent tour. Both returned to Journey in 1996. Mike Baird was chosen to drum for them Live on the tour.
Perry changed the original title of this project from Freedom to Raised on Radio, once again against the wishes of longtime manager and cofounder Herbie Herbert and some of the band membersValory and Smith, however, earned their percentage of the profits from the tour. Perry later regretted firing them and teamed back up with them for the 1995 album Trial By Fire .which would be Perry's last album with no concert tour due to hip problems and surgery.
The 1986 Raised On Radio tour started on August 23, 1986, at the Mountain Aire Festival in Angels Camp, California and ended February 1, 1987 in Anchorage, Alaska. Opening acts for the tour included Honeymoon Suite, The Outfield, and Glass Tiger. The tour was videotaped by MTV and made into a documentary, which includes interviews and concert footage of the band at the height of their career. State of the art computerized lighting and large movable video screens that resembled pool table holders were used as part of the elaborate stage design as Journey was the first to utilize this technology on previous tours. Perry left the band at the conclusion of the last concert.in Anchorage Alaska in 1987. The band would not be heard from again until 1995 when they went into the studio for Trial By Fire which produced their # 1 grammy song When You love A Woman with Ross and Smith once again back in the lineup on bass and drums. .
