I shot some test clips today with the newly released Sony HDR AS100VR Sports Action camera and I'm very impressed so far. I realize my subject matter wasn't very exciting but it gave me an opportunity to see what this small action camera is capable of.
The conditions I shot in were not ideal. I shot at 2 in the afternoon under a direct sun. Those type of conditions challenge any camera.
As a video editor, I like that I can shoot in a neutral grade and do my colorization when I edit. For those who do not like to do a lot of editing, the Sony Vivid color setting straight out of the camera is a good feature.
When you turn on the steadicam feature, the field of view is reduced to 120 degrees. When you turn off the steadicam feature, the field of view is 170 degrees which gives your video the fish eye look and a much wider angle.
Personally, I will be mostly shooting in 1080 60fps with steadicam and also 720 240fps without steadicam.
I live in one of the most visually boring counties in the USA and there is not a lot of pretty stuff to go shoot. I do the best I can in my backyard sometimes. I can't wait to get this camera to some beautiful colorful spots.
This camera is Sony's answer to the GoPro. I think they have a winner. I'll be covering all aspects of this camera in the coming weeks.
