Max Cooper:
This music video project is the first chapter from my Unspoken Words film/Atmos blu-ray explained over at [ Ссылка ] - The visual story begins with a natural analogue for thought. A slitscan view of the mechanics of matter and time as we see rupturing objects reminiscent of branching neural pathways.
The music originated from my attempt to capture a free-flowing stream of thought, to communicate the free thinking, ideas generating state. My work relies as much on this process as it does on rigorous logical thought, and I wanted to try and capture the free part without much subsequent editing. With the meandering development of themes, and changes of direction, like a stream.
I was interested in a visual analogy of the theme, and started chatting to Optical Arts studio in London about the possibility of creating a branching process using slit scan photography and object smashing.
The idea being that something like a branching network of neural activity, and some foundations of the physicality of thought in the album story, could come from smashing a vase (or any other object) and making every fragment trace a path through space as they flew from the point of impact.
It was a big technical challenge, but Optical Arts had prior experience with smashing things on film, along with an amazing team of creatives and editors, and they pushed the idea to great heights using light sources as impact sites and all sorts of trickery, all synced beautifully and painstakingly to the musical elements.
It was a treat getting to work with Optical Arts on this, and seeing their creation process and attention to detail. Many thanks to everyone at Optical Arts, and particularly Joe Jackson, Hannah May, Elliot Lowe, Jamie-Lee Harding, Greg Hayes, Martin Pryor, Miguel Wratten and Ben Gallagher.
Also big thanks to Lawrence Kendrick and Niels Orens who I worked with on the spatial audio mix, mapping the positional information and flow of sounds to the structures of the video sequence. You can hear that via the Apple Music Atmos stream, or the Atmos Blu-ray.
