The aim of this video is to create awareness regarding ammonia.
Ammonia offers opportunities as a future fuel, energy carrier and of course, it continues to be used as a refrigerant for heat pumps and in cooling systems.
Ammonia as a future fuel:
As a future fuel, ammonia needs to be generated using renewable electrical energy from sources such as wind, solar or hydropower. This electric power is used in an electrolyzer to create hydrogen (H2). Combining H2 molecules with nitrogen (N2) from the ambient air results in ammonia molecules (NH3). This ammonia can be combusted in an engine.
Ammonia as an energy carrier:
Generally the generation of hydrogen (H2) is the first step in converting green electrical energy. However, H2 is difficult to store and to handle. That's why it makes sense to store or transport it by converting it into ammonia (NH3). In addition to combusting ammonia in an engine, it is also possible to crack it back into N2 and H2 molecules. For example H2 can then be used to supply fuel cells to generate electrical energy.
Ammonia as a refrigerant:
Ammonia is in use as a refrigerant for cooling systems and its use in heating is drastically increasing due to the rapid growth of heat pump applications.
