What's up guys, I'm Aventouro and I recently traveled to Madeira, an amazing island in the Atlantic Ocean often referred to as the Hawaii of Europe. It’s also known as the Garden of the Atlantic and you will be truly impressed by the explosion of colors that bloom there throughout the year.
Madeira can be easily reached in 2 hours by plane from Lisbon, Portugal and offers incredible hotels for every taste.
Let me show you my top places to visit and give you some insights on how to get there.
1. The first stop is “Ponta de São Lourenço”, just 30 minutes from the capital Funchal. There's a public parking lot and from there you can walk to see “D'Abra Bay” and get to the “Miradouro de São Lourenço” viewpoint.
On the way back to Funchal, take a right towards “Miradouro do Caniçal”, where you can park and walk a few minutes for a view from the other side.
2. “Ponta do Pargo” is located on the southwestern part of the island. Drive directly to this cliff with a lighthouse or park at the “O Fio Tea House”. Enjoy their hospitality and food, then walk to the lighthouse in 20-30 minutes with a breathtaking view.
3. The “Capelinha de Nossa Senhora de Fátima” chapel is in the north and almost in the middle of the island in “Sao Vicente”, just 35 minutes from Funchal.
Park at the bottom and climb the stairs for stunning views of the surrounding mountains and ocean.
4. “Pico Ruivo” is the highest peak, reaching almost 1900 meters above sea level. Park at the “Achada do Teixeira” public lot, about 1 hour from Funchal, and walk 1.5 hours to the top. You'll also see the second-highest peak, “Pico Do Arieiro”, which offers also incredible views and might be more instagrammable – from Ruivo you can hike over.
5. Another impressive spot is the “Miradouro da Ribeira” in Janela, just 50 minutes from Funchal. Park in the public lot and walk 2-3 minutes to take in the remarkable rocks in the sea.
6. A highlight was definitely “Calheta” in the south, where I went on a whale watching tour. Book your tour in advance, park at the harbor and head out to cruise with dolphins and sometimes whales. You can also encounter sea turtles and always enjoy the smell of the sea in the air.
7. The last stop is “Ponta do Sol” and just nearby is the “Cascata dos Anjos” waterfall, which drops onto a road. Although it's a popular spot, it's interesting to experience the natural car wash. “Ponta do Sol” is in the south and easy to reach. Stroll around or take a last bath in the ocean before you had back to Funchal.
Madeira is so lush and splendid in nature and hospitality; I want to go back soon.
