This Tourdion, a lively dance for couples, was massively popular in the 1530s, popularised by Pierre Attaingnant, the legendary music publisher and printer under King Francis I, who printed the tune many, many times. The bacchinalian words here were added to the music in 1949 by composer César Geoffray, inspired by another drinking song from the same period which was also called 'When I drink wine claret ', published by the Venetian Ottaviano Scotto in 1535 and whose lyrics also refer to Anjou or Arbois wines. I'm sure either would make me very drunk. Rupert and Will less so.
Quand je bois du vin clairet When I drink a Claret Wine,
Ami tout tourne tourne tourne friends, my head turns, turns, turns
Aussi désormais je bois Anjou ou Arbois so from now on I'm drinking Anjou or Arbois
Quand je bois du vin clairet When I drink a Claret Wine,
Ami tout tourne tourne tourne friends, my head turns, turns, turns
Aussi désormais je bois Anjou ou Arbois so from now on I'm drinking Anjou or Arbois
Chantons et buvons let's sing and drink,
A ce flacon faisons la guerre let's make war on this bottle
Chantons et buvons let's sing and drink,
Mes amis buvons donc. my friends, drink up then.
