On May 15, 1829 in Harmony, Pennsylvania Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were translating the Book of Mormon and having a question from their reading, retreated to a place in the woods to ask God about Baptism. Joseph had never been baptized, and he wanted to know more about the ordinance and the authority necessary to perform it. While praying John the Baptist appeared to them and conferred Priesthood authority to Baptize saying, “Upon you my fellow servants,” John declared, “in the name of Messiah I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins.”
