◼Isola Bella, located in Lake Maggiore about 400 meters off the coast of Stresa, is part of the Borromean Islands (in addition to this we remember Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori). It is the second largest in area with its 320 meters in length and 180 in width, almost entirely occupied by Palazzo Borromeo and its luxuriant park.Isola Bella: historyIn 1632 Charles III Borromeo decided to undertake the construction of a palace for his wife Isabella d’Adda, he chose a bare islet located in front of Stresa, in the gulf of Verbano where the Toce river flows. The works suffered a setback towards the middle of the seventeenth century due to the plague that developed in the Duchy of Milan, but were resumed with renewed vigor by the sons of Charles III: Cardinal Giberto III (1615-1672) and above all Vitaliano VI ( 1620-1690). The latter had the merit of entrusting the completion of the works to the famous Roman architect Carlo Fontana. The gardens were inaugurated in 1671, with Charles IV (1657-1734) a lover of the arts and a man of letters himself. At the end of the eighteenth / early nineteenth century the palace was visited by Napoleon with Josephine de Beauharnais and by the Princess of Wales Carolina Amalia of Brunswick. The palace and the garden: visiting Isola BellaBaroque in style with Mannerist nuances, the imposing building that occupies almost the entire island was designed by the most famous architects of the time. The interior, elegant and sumptuously furnished, houses an unmissable collection of tapestries with Flemish tapestries. The underground rooms, on the other hand, are characterized according to the fashion of the time by artificial caves with walls encrusted with shells and decorated with nymphs and black marble mirrors.More information on Palazzo Borromeo in the specific sheet. But what really strikes and leaves you speechless is the famous park: an Italian garden made up of ten terraces superimposed on a severed pyramid, embellished with statues, fountains, rare shrubs, exotic plants and flowers with delicate scents such as magnolia and camellias. . The upper part of the gardens, nicknamed the "amphitheater" for the performances that were held here, is surmounted by the unicorn, the emblem of the Borromeo family.Source:
