In this video I discuss about the Assam Movement (Agitation) which ran from 1979 to 1985 and finally ended with signing of the Assam Accord on 15th August 1985
The movement was led by All Assam Students Union (AASU) and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP) and demanded the Government of India to detect, disenfranchise and deport illegal immigrants Bangladesh or formerly, East Bengal and East Pakistan.
The movement defined a six-year period of sustained civil disobedience campaigns, political instability and widespread ethnic violence.
To put an end to the agitation, the Assam Accord was signed in presence of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. From Assam side the signatories of the accord were Prafulla Mahanta, Bhrigu Phukan and Biraj Sarma.
