The Vikings, who were famed seafarers and warriors in their prime, were also known to be barbaric when it came to certain executions. One such brutal method of execution was the Blood Eagle which pretty much guaranteed painful death for the victim. By today's standards, it's a particularly shocking form of execution. But what did the Blood Eagle Ritual really look like? Today we'll explore how exactly this method was performed and why.

While we don't want to get overly graphic, no matter how weird it may sound the "blood eagle" is an actual method of torture used by Vikings during their invasions for those deemed most opposing during the 9th Century. The blood eagle was also a one-time ritual performed in rare cases out of necessity. It occurred when a major blood feud had broken out between opposing families, and the only acceptable method of reconciliation would have been through death.

Various kinds of blades may have been used for different parts of the blood eagle ceremony. Previous archaeological findings have shown instances of weaponry that would have been well-suited for this ritual.

According to researchers, "altruistic self-sacrifice" and "performing conspicuous acts of violence and destruction on one’s own body" both among Viking warriors and in the noble households, were common practices in Viking society. This suggests that written accounts of torture rituals such as blood eagle were recounting events that actually occurred and once carried great significance within the Viking hierarchy.

The blood eagle was therefore more than just punishment; it had a purpose. While it was theoretically possible to engage in such actions voluntarily, one would have to be mentally unhinged to ever want this inflicted upon them in real life.
