Residents of Cizre return home
The people of Cizre have begun returning to their homes. Turkey’s Interior Minister declared the southeastern district clear of PKK terrorists and said security forces have full control of the area. The district had been under a curfew for nearly three months.
Turkey-EU refugee agreement
The prime minister of Turkey and the president of the European Union Council have announced an agreement to keep refugee flow into Europe under tight control. Ahmet Davutoglu and Donald Tusk met in Ankara on Thursday to discuss the refugee crisis. And Davutoglu said Turkey would continue to fulfill its obligations to reduce the number of refugees entering Europe. But he also stressed Turkey and Greece cannot be expected to shoulder the burden alone.
Assailants attack police in Istanbul
Two female DHKP-C assailants attacked a police station in Istanbul’s Bayrampasa district. They threw grenades and opened fire at police. And after a brief shootout, they fled the scene and took shelter in a nearby building. Police immediately launched a follow-up operation and killed the attackers in another shootout.
Court jails Alan Kurdi’s smugglers
A Turkish court has sentenced two Syrians to four years over the drowning of five people, including toddler Alan Kurdi. The three-year-old’s body was found lying facedown on a beach near the resort town of Bodrum last September. The image triggered sympathy from across the world to the plight of refugees. The boy was among a group of others trying to reach Greece by boat, when he drowned - along with his mother and brother.
PM visits Tehran
The Prime Minister of Turkey met Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as part of his first official visit to Iran. Ahmet Davutoglu described his visit to Tehran as the beginning of a new era. He said the two countries must develop a ‘common perspective’ to end problems in the region. And emphasised the region’s destiny must not be left to foreign actors.
