In our last video, we went over snow peas, and now we're talking about Sweet Peas. These are beautiful, fragrant flowers that you DO NOT eat. One of my absolute favorite flowers, sweet peas are easy to grow especially in zones 9 and 10. There are just a few things you need to know:

The first thing to know is the distinction between sweet pea flowers and edible vegetables. These flowers are NOT edible. In fact, they can be poisonous to humans and pets. If you want to plant an edible pea, visit [ Ссылка ] and check out our video just before this one.
Sweet pea flowers do look pretty similar to the edible varieties. They grow in the same way and show off similar-looking flowers. However, sweet pea flowers are intensely fragrant and keep for a good amount of time, making them an excellent option for cut flower arrangements.
Like the edible peas, you want to plant sweet peas in the fall. A common mistake is to wait until the spring to sow seeds, but they actually need the cool season to grow and get established. If your plants are too small by the time the temperatures warm up, your plants won't be able to withstand the heat.
By planting in the fall, you give your sweet peas the head start they need. Even though they'll grow slowly with limited sunlight, those extra few months are essential. Even though you may not see it, your plants are doing critical work by investing in strong root systems. Once the season changes, your plants will TAKE OFF, and you'll be rewarded with incredible blooms and scents.
Starting sweet pea seeds can be a little tricky. You want to soak them in water for a few hours before planting (overnight is too long). This will soften up the tough exterior of the seed coat and more easily allow your seed to germinate. Some people will even knick their seeds, but that's not something that we do.
After you have sown the seeds, keep your soil moist. Sweet pea seeds can take a long time to germinate, so don't get discouraged. Just keep an eye on moisture levels, even if it's taking 2 or 3 weeks. If you still aren't seeing anything after that, you want to sow more seed.
Once they germinate, they're an easy plant to grow. They require very little maintenance. In fact, we don't prune at all when we're growing for seed production. We will take cuttings, though, because we just can't get enough of the smell, and we love to stick them in a vase or share with friends. Other than that, just keep them watered and enjoy these beautiful blooms all spring and summer long!
