This is one of my favorite songs of all-time and I knew the John Prine version before Blaze Foley's original, but they're both beautiful performances. "Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat, try to hide my sorrow from the people I meet and get along with it all" is such a perfect depiction of those days when you're just getting through to the next one and dreaming of a new start. Blaze Foley is a master of using simple words to convey deep feelings, and these lyrics are one his finest examples.
