Subclavian Artery : Origin, Course, Branches and supply
Origin:
_______
The subclavian artery originates from the brachiocephalic trunk on the right side of the body and directly from the aortic arch on the left side. It is the main arterial supply to the upper limb and also provides blood to various structures in the neck and thorax.
Course:
________
After arising from its origin, the subclavian artery ascends superiorly and laterally, passing beneath the clavicle. It then continues its course into the axilla, where it becomes the axillary artery at the lateral border of the first rib.
Branches:
----------------
Vertebral Artery: This branch arises from the first part of the subclavian artery and ascends through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae, supplying blood to the brainstem, cerebellum, and posterior part of the brain.
Internal Thoracic Artery: Also known as the internal mammary artery, it arises from the first part of the subclavian artery and descends along the anterior chest wall, providing blood to the anterior intercostal spaces and the breast.
Thyrocervical Trunk: This branch arises from the first part of the subclavian artery and further divides into smaller branches, including the inferior thyroid artery, ascending cervical artery, and suprascapular artery, supplying blood to various structures in the neck and shoulder region.
Costocervical Trunk: Arising from the second part of the subclavian artery, it gives rise to branches that supply the upper intercostal spaces and the deep muscles of the neck and back.
Supply:
_______
The subclavian artery supplies blood to:
Upper limb: Through its continuation as the axillary artery, it provides arterial supply to the shoulder, arm, forearm, and hand.
Neck: Through its branches, it supplies blood to the thyroid gland, cervical vertebrae, and muscles of the neck.
Thorax: The internal thoracic artery supplies blood to the anterior chest wall and the breast.
Understanding the origin, course, branches, and supply of the subclavian artery is crucial for medical students studying anatomy and clinical practice.
