A Mayan megacity has been discovered in the jungles of Peten, Guatemala, and archaeologists are using advanced 3D imaging equipment to map the new discovery. Due to its size, many are saying history will need to be rewritten after this amazing discovery, as it indicates that the Mayan civilization was much larger and complex than previously believed.
The remains of the megacity were hidden under the jungles of northern Guatemala, whose dense foliage still obscures most of the area. The city consisted of around 60 thousand buildings and a network of roads that connected the city to other urban centers. The sophisticated civilization dates from the Mayan Classical period, which lasted from 250 to 900 AD. Scientists estimate the population of the city peaked at around 10 million people, five times as large as the entire population of England at around the same time.
