With the loss of his parents' baby as a consequence of his own actions, Clark loses his sense of belonging and resolves to abandon his loved ones to protect them from himself. Using the Red Kryptonite ring to cloud his thoughts and numb the pain, Clark leaves Smallville and his old life behind.
