DIAMOND HILL CONNEMARA GALWAY - IRELAND:
How to get there?
From Dub to Connemara:
- Train (most recommended) - Get a train to Galway City’s Ceannt Station
- From Galway station, you have the option to hire a car / book a tour agency / public transport
- Option 1: Hiring a car: There are a number of car hires if you are able to drive. The way isn’t too bad if you can go slow and you already know the places to go. If you are taking a car there are two routes to Connemara from Galway city. Lake route & coastal route, look for signs for An Spidéal to take the coastal route through the Gaeltacht region; follow Clifton to take the lake route which joins up with the mountain route.
- Option 2: Tour agency - I hired Conleth from Procabs, the person was very good. They weren’t a tour guide which I liked since we could decide where to go. :) But there are many out there if you want to explore and need a tour guide.
-
- Option 3: Public transport: The Galway city has a good network of buses. The national bus service, Bus Éireann departs from the Ceannt station at Eyre Square; the private operators will depart from the Galway new coach station on Fairgreen Road (5 min walk from Eyre square).
- If you are using the public transport The 424 which departs Ceannt Station travels along the coast from Bearna out as far as An Cheathrú Rua and Leitir Mealláin and as far as Carna once a day. The 419 also departs Ceannt Station and goes along the lake route to Clifden and on to Leenane from Clifden once a day.
- City Link operates a regular service privately from Galway New Coach station and travels to Clifden and on to Letterfrack and Cleggan twice a day.
I took a lot of my travel tips and routes from www.Connemara.ie/getting-to-connemara/. Hope you find this helpful. Enjoy Ireland!
DIAMOND HILL:
Diamond Hill or Bengooria is an isolated peak overlooking the village of Letterfrack, in the northwest corner of the Twelve Bens in Connemara National Park in County Galway, Ireland.
The Discovery Map spells the name as "Diomond Hill", however, Tempan notes that this is not the locally accepted spelling (being "Diamond"), and relates to the glitter of the quartz crystals on the mountain.
HILL WALKING :
Diamond Hill is popular for its accessibility and panoramic views, only ranking behind Croagh Patrick for footfall, and attracts both Irish walkers and foreign tourists.
SKY ROAD :
The Sky Road is one of the most popular places to visit in Galway and is the most popular of the many things to do in Clifden.
The circular route takes you from Clifden onto the Kingston peninsula where it offers stunning panoramic views over Clifden Bay and its offshore islands. There are very few places in Ireland which can rival the rugged beauty seen from the Sky Road,
ABBEYGLEN CASTEL:
Abbeyglen Castle was built in 1832 by John d’Arcy of Clifden Castle.
HISTORY OF BALLYNAHINCH CASTLE
Ballynahinch Castle has been interwined in the history of Connemara and its people for centuries, from the recorded battle between the O’Flahertys and O’Malleys, in 1384.
HISTORY OF ASHFORD CASTLE
A castle was built on the perimeter of a monastic site in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman House of Burke.
