STORYLINE:
Afghan officials said on Monday US troops shot and killed two Afghan civilians as their truck was approaching an American convoy.
Commander for Kabul highways, colonel Mohammad Alim said "a coalition convoy... fired on a truck which was driving beside the convoy, which martyred two people and wounded another one".
Afghani Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said the victims in Monday's incident were employees of a company that repairs police vehicles.
Major Green of the US military was seen hitting another US soldier over the helmet while swearing at him at the scene of the shooting.
He said: "We will work together to determine exactly what happened. And as soon as we've found out what has happened, then we will do the right thing."
US forces' spokesman Jamie Graybeal said the vehicle failed to heed instructions to stop as it came close to the convoy outside of the Afghan capital, Kabul, and the soldiers took what he called 'appropriate measures' to protect themselves.
He confirmed that two individuals were killed and said an assessment was under way.
