(19 Jan 2019) SERBIANS BRAVE ICY WATERS TO FETCH EPIPHANY CROSS
Dozens of swimmers plunged into the icy waters of the Danube river in Belgrade on Saturday, taking part in the traditional cross retrieval race that marks Epiphany in the Julian Calendar.
A tradition observed by the Serbian Orthodox church, swimmers saluted the onlookers, jumped into the Danube and aimed to retrieve a wooden cross anchored on a buoy in the river.
According to local folklore and religious beliefs, the winner of the race, the first person to reach the wooden cross will have good health and a prosperous year ahead.
The winner of this year's race was Danilo Prendic, a Belgrade local.
