A museum dedicated to the history of Paris was instigated in 1866 by Baron Haussmann, Prefect of the Seine, who oversaw the extensive urban development works that completely transformed the design and character of the city.
The museum opened in 1880 in the heart of the Marais district, housed in the Hôtel des Ligneris, a large private mansion known as the Carnavalet. Built in the 16th century, and remodelled in the 17th, this grand building is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.
