In Iran, the estranged families of Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK or Rajavi Cult) members who remain trapped inside the MEK camp in Albania created a petition appealing to Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama for help to contact their loved ones. The petition has attracted almost eleven thousand signatures.
The MEK responded by attacking the families, calling them terrorists and mercenaries, and claiming that they want to come and attack the camp with missiles.
So far, the Albanian government, under pressure from the MEK’s backers, has been silent on this issue. But pressure is growing both from the families and from the members inside the camp who are forced to be apart.
Since their arrival in Albania, many MEK members have died suspiciously as well as through illnesses. But the Albanian authorities are not allowed to investigate. There are now reports that COVID-19 has been detected inside and still Albanian Health Ministry personnel are not allowed into the camp to undertake tests. Families and human rights activists are asking the Albanians to come clean and let there be access to this camp and to instigate investigations. They remind PM Rama that the Albanian government is the only government after Saddam Hussein that has given them an extraterritorial base with complete impunity and extrajudicial self-rule.
Alongside the petition, many families have been writing letters and making films addressing national and international bodies, crying for help. This video shows members of the Mohammadnejad family in Urumieh, West Azerbaijan Province in Iran talking directly to their beloved relative, hoping their message will reach him. They appeal to the Albanian authorities to enable them to visit the country and find him.
