"At midnight, Sofia suffered an acute pulmonary edema. She suffered a heart attack and was revitalised shortly after. Unfortunately, she passed away which forced us to continue the separation at 1:00 am local time (06:00 GMT). We had left the separation procedure at 70 per cent at 7:00 pm local time (00:00 GMT), and from 2:00 am (07:00GMT) till 05:30 am (10:30 GMT) we ended the separation, which left Mariana alive and in intensive care."

"The problem that we had is that at midnight, Sofia had an acute pulmonary edema. We revitalised and things did not go well, despite the efforts of the entire medical team. So, with one baby gone we had to do everything we could to save the other one. Responding to this emergency, we took the other girl back into surgery and separated them. If I wasn't so sad, I would say this operation was a success because we were able to theoretically separate them. It turned out that after the surgery, Mariana had an inflammation that we could not control and she died this morning."

STORYLINE:
Doctors in Bogota told reporters on Wednesday both of the conjoined twins, who were put through a lengthy separation procedure, died on Wednesday morning as a result of complications during the surgery.
Four-month-old babies, Sofia and Mariana, died after a team of sixty doctors tried to separate the two sisters, who shared portions of the scalp, skull and some capillary and vascular organs.
Doctors announced Sofia died first at midnight local time (05:00 GMT) from an acute pulmonary edema.
According to Neurosurgeon Tito Perilla, doctors were forced to continue the separation in order to save the other baby.
"We had left the separation procedure at 70 per cent at 7:00 pm local time (00:00 GMT), and from 2: 00 am (07:00 GMT) till 05:30 am (10:30 GMT) we continued and we ended the separation, which left Mariana alive and in intensive care," Perilla said.
Hours after this first announcement was made, paediatrician Omar Ovalle delivered the news to members of the media that baby Mariana had died as well.
"Despite the efforts of our medical team, Mariana passed away shortly after 10:00 am local time (15:00 GMT) as a result of multi-systemic failure that originated from the complicated separation process," Ovalle said.
Although neither twins survived, Ovalle said the doctors were able to separate them.
"If I wasn't so sad, I would say this operation was a success because we were able to theoretically separate them. It turned out that after the surgery, Mariana had an inflammation that we could not control and she died this morning", Ovalle told reporters.
There are only thirty-nine cases of conjoined twins united at the skull worldwide.
