Exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site Historic Forts of Elvas, located along the Portugal-Spain border. This border is the world's longest-standing border, remaining essentially unchanged for centuries. The Elvas fort, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, sits along the main road between Lisbon and Madrid, and was once considered one of the world's strongest fortresses. It's a fascinating spot to explore, with impressive towers and walls, bastions and gates, barracks, other military buildings, and of course the all-important churches and monasteries. There's also an enormous aqueduct to supply the fortress during sieges.
