In southern Senegal, Daga Baldé, a local leader in her community, is a passionate advocate for girls’ and women’s education. Denied the opportunity to complete her own education when she was a girl, Daga is now on a mission, with the support of Tostan, to ensure that children in her community can stay in school and have access to all the opportunities that she missed — and that they all have a right to have.

About the organization:
Tostan is a nonprofit organization operating in rural resource-poor regions in five West African countries and partnering with organizations across Africa and around the world. Tostan’s mission is to empower communities to develop and achieve their vision for the future and inspire large-scale movements leading to dignity for all.
Since 1991, Tostan has engaged with over 3,000 communities, reaching more than 5 million people in 9 countries through its empowering education program, based on human rights, that helps communities lead improvements in their well-being -- to improve health and education, reduce violence, and sustain change from within in partnership with local actors.
Communities who partner with Tostan make major advances to achieve their vision for sustainable community well-being including: improved gender equality; more women and young people in community leadership roles; strengthened governance; decreases in violence; and improved collaboration in households and communities.
