BIBLE STORY
(from Matthew 2:1-12, adapted by Sharon Wilson):
Jesus was born in Bethlehem during the reign of King Herod. Herod was a wicked and selfish king.
Not long after Jesus was born, wise men from the East traveled to Jerusalem. Today we would call them scholars or scientists instead of wise men. When they arrived in Jerusalem, they asked around, “We discovered a new star in the sky. We believe this is the sign that a new King of the Jews has been born. We have come to worship him. Can you tell us where he is?”
This news did not make King Herod happy. He called all the religious leaders and lawyers together and asked them to tell him when and where this newborn King was born. The religious leaders and lawyers studied the Old Testament prophecies and explained to Herod that the prophets of God had predicted that this King of the Jews, the Messiah, would be born in Bethlehem.
King Herod was very angry and jealous. He did not want there to be another king. However, he didn’t want anyone to know how much he hated the newborn King so he came up with an evil plan. He secretly invited the wise men to a meeting. He asked them when they first saw the new star. Then he told them to go find the baby in Bethlehem and then report back to him so he could also go and worship the newborn King.
Leaving King Herod’s palace, the wise men continued their journey. The star they had seen appeared again and led them to Bethlehem. It stopped right over the house where Joseph, Mary and Jesus were staying. They were very happy to have found the promised King. They immediately fell down on their knees and praised and worshiped Jesus. They gave him the expensive gifts they had brought. These gifts included gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
The wise men were now ready to head back home. They prepared to go back to Jerusalem and tell King Herod where to find Jesus. But that night God warned them in a dream to not go back to King Herod and tell him where to find Jesus. God told the wise men that Herod only wanted to know so he could go kill Jesus, not worship him. So the wise men returned home to their own country by a different route.
