Shelter Cove, California in Humboldt County is a hidden gem along Northern California’s Lost Coast.
Because of the hour-long windy detour from Highway 101, it’s a region not too overrun by west coast roadtrippers… yet!
Unspoiled, uncrowded beaches await those who make the trek.
But, a word of warning… these are not waters where you want to go for a swim. Strong currents, steep drop offs, and sneaker waves are prevalent here. So, visitors are encouraged to enjoy the beauty of the wild Pacific from a safe distance.
You’ll find many natural seaside attractions along Lower Pacific Drive.
Abolone Point is a great picnic spot with expansive views where you can see the wild waters crash over the rugged coastline and intertidal zones.
Just down the road from Abalone Point is Seal Rock where you can observe harbor seals and sea lions in their natural habitat.
The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse was moved to Shelter Cove from Cape Mendocino and opened to the public in May of 2000. The lighthouse is located at Mal Coombs Park, which is also a great place to observe local marine life in and around the tidepools. Be sure to check the tide charts before your visit to ensure a safe viewing experience.
We ended our tour of Shelter Cove with a visit to the scenic cove from which the town received its name.
We highly recommend a visit to this charming and ultra scenic coastal destination in Northern California.
