What a cool, danceable song about something absolutely horrific! This song was OMD's first top-ten hit. Everyone loved the energy OMD brought to this song and their whole 10-song set! They sounded great and it was awesome to be there on a beautiful day on the beach. OMD was definitely one of the highlights of the Darker Waves Festival.

Regardless of country, June 6, 1945 was a terrible day in human history. With the culmination of the Manhattan Project and WWII dragging on in the Pacific, a US B29 Superfortress Bomber (named "Enola Gay" by its pilot who named it after his mom) dropped an uranium fission bomb (named "Little Boy") on Hiroshima, Japan, killing around 100,000 people, mostly civilians. And while the song has so many illusions to the bombing, including "it's 8:15, and that's the time that it's always been" referring to the how clocks became frozen with the detonation time, and "is mother proud of Little Boy today?" and "it shouldn't ever have to end this way," and is hence justifiably viewed as an antiwar track, Andy McCluskey said he "wasn't really politically motivated to write the song" and hoped it "conveyed an ambivalence about whether it was the right or the wrong thing to do." A horrific and tragic day either way.
