Recently I have got some comments about me making videos in noisy environments like this one in a busy street. One was positive, one neutral and somebody asked me not to gp to a quiet place to make videos because he cannot hear what I say. I understand that it is easier to understand a speech without the distracting background noise, especially when it is not in your native language. The real solution is developing your skill to focus, which is very difficult for almost everybody. The main point in mediation is to practice focusing on one thing for a long time. It requires self-discipline and lots of mental energy. Do this exercise: listen to me attentively in this video and then you will hear me better. Now, when you learn a foreign language, you need to practice listening for thousands of hours to reach at a higher level. The speakers seem to speak very fast. But actually it is the listener's brain that is slow. There's too much information: words, grammar, contextual elements etc. and they need intense concentration and fast processing speed and large working memory. Background noise is a distraction that uses these mental resources and thus hinders listening effectiveness. Run forward. Practice listening in noisy environment to get use to real life scenarios. By the way, speaking in a busy, noisy environment like in the streets of Hong Kong is also not easy but I improved this skell and now I can manage better than a year ago.
