The White House often hosts a huge celebration on the 4th of July. It's a tradition dating back over 200 years. Stewart McLaurin knows that history more than most as he serves as the president of the White House Historical Association. He gives us a reflection of Independence Day at the White House. McLaurin says, "The celebration of American Independence Day is the oldest celebration of any holiday at the White House. Over the years it's taken on many forms and formats. Today, it's a large concert, typically on the South Lawn of the White House. The fireworks will go up over the National Mall, the Washington Monument. The President and the First Family will frequently watch from the Truman Balcony with thousands of friends invited to watch. We remember that the White House is not just an office to the President and staff, but it's a home to the President and his family. And so it's a family gathering."
