Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe delivered a daily briefing Wednesday on the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Health officials responded to Premier Doug Ford’s comments during a media availability earlier in the day in which he said testing in the province has been “unacceptable” to date. Dr. David Williams said the health officials and the premier are “on the same page” and are working together to increase testing capacity.
Ontario confirmed 550 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, which is the highest single-day jump the province has seen since the pandemic began. The province now has 5, 276 cases.
The death toll has risen to 171 after 21 new COVID-19-related deaths were reported.
The province has so far tested 84,601 people for the novel coronavirus. There are 1,102 people currently under investigation who are awaiting test results.
