In this week’s episode we cover:
1. I'm getting ready to make your Daydreamer sweater and am really having fun planning it out. I've already bought the pattern and some fingering weight Rambouillet, but I haven't decided what to hold with the Rambouillet yet. I found some really beautiful Suri alpaca that I would love to use, but am concerned it won't hold its shape as well as mohair. I know you've mentioned Suri as a substitute for mohair before in things like shawls, but would you recommend it in a sweater like the Daydreamer where slipperiness could be an issue?
2. When spinning, my right thumb keeps getting very sore. Does that happen to you, too/do you think that's normal? Or is it more likely that I'm drafting improperly? I've been defaulting to long draw because it's easier on my hands but I'd like to spin worsted a bit more too.
3. Hi Andrea! I was wondering if you would recommend using FDF's Foxy Lady (70% superwash merino & 30% silk, 428 yards/100g) for shawls? I know that silk is drapey and doesn't always bounce back when stretched, but I am wondering if this blend could work? Thank you!
4. Hello Andrea, your podcast is a delight, and I'm learning so much useful things thanks to you! I've got a question about blocking: I hear (and read) on the internet that blocking will smooth out uneven stitches. But in my case, it never does! I'm wondering if there's a magic step I'm missing or a secret technique I'm not aware of to help the stitches become more relaxed and even. Thank you for your help!
5. I have been starting to dabble in spinning. I have some plain white/cream roving from a local sheep farmer. I don't even know the breed and didn't think to ask way back when I bought it. It is a more rustic roving and I am not sure if I will be able to wear it next to skin. I have some other softer merino roving I plan to spin. Do you think I could ply the merino single with a single of the rustic wool? Would that help soften it up? Is it ok to ply different breeds or even different fiber together? I don't have a blending board yet, so I can't blend it with different fibers.
