(1 Dec 1995) NATO gave the go-ahead on Friday (1/12) for 2,600 troops to take
up positions in Bosnia to prepare the way for deployment of a
60,000-strong alliance-led peace force. In southern Bosnia, residents of the city of Mostar were able to move freely between the Croat and
Moslem sectors following the signing of an agreement by their
respective mayors on Thursday (30/11). Speaking in Pale, the Bosnian serb leader, Radovan Karadzic warned that unless the situation was
resolved, Sarajevo would become a "European Beirut". As if to
emphasise the danger of further violence, a sniper opened fire
with a rifle on a Sarajevo tram. A bullet smalled into a doorway,
ricocheted off a pillar, and injured the driver.
