In 300 AD, the Zapotec built a city at the top of a mountain 25 minutes outside of Oaxaca. This land is now known as Monte Albán, and is one of the earliest indigenous lands in all of Mexico. The Zapotec were incredibly sophisticated for their time, and the history about Monte Albán can only really be told through hieroglyphs found all around the ruins.
While there were many tourists there, we were surprised that there weren't more. Currently, you can still walk up to many of the ruins and touch the foundation that built one of the most established indigenous histories in Mexico.
After a long day in the sun, we thought we would unwind with some good ol' fashion Mezcal tastings. Smokey, earthy, herbaceous -- all words to describe the local and delicious mezcal from Oaxaca.
