It's called "Volt Typhoon," a state-sponsored Chinese #hacking group that Microsoft says has been #spying on US critical infrastructure. In a report out this week, Microsoft says the group is out to "disrupt critical communications" between the US and Asia in the event of a crisis. According to Microsoft, the group has been active since mid-2021 and has targeted critical infrastructure in parts of the US including the territory of Guam -- home to strategic US military bases and a major communications hub between the US and Asia. Microsoft adds: "Detecting and mitigating this attack could be challenging." #China has slammed the report. China's foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday: "This is a collective disinformation campaign of the Five Eyes coalition countries initiated by the US for geopolitical purposes." The report comes as tensions simmer between the US and china over a raft of issues including Taiwan, access to technology like chips, and territorial disputes in the Pacific.
