In order to enter the fast-growing sport utility vehicle market of the 1990s, Honda installed the Passport into their brand line-up for 1994. Essentially a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo, the Honda Passport was presented almost three years before the CR-V was sold in the United States. Offered with two-wheel drive as well as a four-wheel drive models.
The first generation Passport was offered in three body trims, DX, LX, and EX. The DX has a 5-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel-drive, and a 2.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 120 horsepower. The LX has available an optional 4-speed automatic transmission, optional four-wheel-drive, and a standard 3.2-liter V6 engine producing 175 horsepower. The EX offered the standard V6 engine and four-wheel-drive. For 1996, the V6 engine was upgraded to 190 horsepower. A shift-on-the-fly system became available.
