The prime minister and his deputy, Angela Rayner, met with regional mayors in England on just their fifth day in office.

The government drafted a devolution bill to be launched as part of next week's king speech. Starmer used the meeting to underline the party's desire for a new wave of deals which could see local authorities take over everything, from public transport to infrastructure and skills funding. Starmer told the mayors, "I'm a great believer in the idea that those with skin in the game, those that know their communities, make much better decisions than people sitting in Westminster and Whitehall".
