STORYLINE:
Thousands of students in Mexico City protested peacefully on Monday to commemorate the 55th anniversary of a massacre of student protesters.
On 2 October 1968, soldiers and government agents opened fire during the pro-democracy march, which was held days before the Summer Olympics was staged in the city.
Official reports at the time said 25 people were killed, but human rights activists believe as many as 300 may have died.
The 1968 movement is credited with sparking Mexico's democratic transition.
The government at the time was almost a one-party institution, dominated by the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which held the presidency from 1929 to 2000.
