(17 Aug 2020) Anti-government protests demanding the removal of a local governor escalated in the Iraqi city of Basra on Sunday, following the killing of an activist in the city.
Prominent activist Tahsin Usama al-Khefaji was killed by unknown armed people on Friday at his internet service centre in the city.
Al-Khefaji had participated in anti-corruption protests and protests against the country's political elite.
On Sunday night, protesters threw stones at the governor's house, clashing with security forces and burning a police car.
One of the demonstrators said people loyal to governor Asaad al-Aidani had shot at protesters.
Anti-government activists have sought to blame supporters of Iran-backed Iraqi militias for targeting activists, and have staged similar attacks against sit-ins in the capital and the country's southern cities.
